How this calculation works
Map scale works exactly like any representative scale:
ground = map × N | map = ground ÷ N
The convenience of metric maps is that the denominators are round: at 1:25,000, 1 cm is 250 m and 4 cm is 1 km. At 1:50,000, 2 cm is 1 km.

The unit chain is worth seeing once written out, because it is the step people skip: 4.3 cm at 1:50,000 is 4.3 × 50,000 = 215,000 cm, and 215,000 cm ÷ 100 = 2,150 m = 2.15 km. Every conversion on this page runs that chain in exact millimetres first, so mixed metric and imperial input never accumulates rounding.
A resized or screenshotted map no longer has its printed scale
The representative fraction is a property of the sheet, not of the data. Print a 1:50,000 sheet at 71% and its RF becomes 50,000 ÷ 0.71 ≈ 1:70,423 — the printed scale bar is still correct because it shrank with everything else, but the stated ratio in the legend is now wrong, and so is any measurement taken with an unmodified 1:50,000 romer. The same applies to a screenshot at an unknown zoom. If several resizes were involved, work out the combined factor on the scale chain calculator; if you do not know the factor at all, measure a feature of known length and recover it with the print scale correction calculator. Use the printed scale bar rather than the printed ratio whenever the two could disagree.
Large scale and small scale
“Large-scale map” means a large fraction — 1/10,000 is larger than 1/250,000 — so a large-scale map shows less ground in more detail. The wording is counter-intuitive but the arithmetic is not.
What this does not tell you
A map scale is a horizontal, planimetric relationship. It does not include elevation change, so ground distance over steep terrain is longer than the map suggests, and it says nothing about walking time.
Projection matters too. Every flat map distorts a curved surface, and on small-scale maps the stated scale is only exact along certain lines — Mercator distances near the poles are badly exaggerated. For long distances or navigation, use the map's own grid, scale bar and projection notes, and treat this as a conversion tool rather than a survey instrument.

- The one with the smaller denominator. 1:10,000 is a large-scale map showing a small area in detail; 1:250,000 is small-scale, covering a wide area coarsely.
- Is the map distance the same as the walking distance?
- No. Map distance is horizontal. Slope, switchbacks and detours all add to the distance you actually travel, and a scale bar cannot account for terrain.
