How this calculation works
A representative scale of 1:N is a direct multiplier in both directions:
real = drawing × N | drawing = real ÷ N
Every input is normalised to exact millimetres first, so you can measure in millimetres and read the answer in metres or feet and inches without a second conversion step. Enlargement scales such as 2:1 or 5:1 use the full ratio, not an assumed 1.
Reduction and enlargement scales
ISO 5455 specifies a recommended series of reduction scales (1:2, 1:5, 1:10, 1:20, 1:50, 1:100 and their decimal multiples) and enlargement scales (2:1, 5:1, 10:1). The full standard is a paid ISO publication, so treat this as the recommended series rather than a requirement. Staying on the series means an ordinary scale rule reads your drawing directly.
Metric drawing scales and what they mean per millimetre
Metric notation is a plain ratio, so the denominator is the conversion factor. The statuses below come from the same verified reference set as the rest of the site — ISO 5455 for the drawing series, and documented practice where no standard defines a value.

At 1:50, 84 mm of paper is 84 × 50 = 4,200 mm. At 1:100 the same 84 mm is 8,400 mm — which is why identifying the scale correctly matters more than measuring precisely.
Solving for an unknown scale, then verifying it
When the title block is missing, cropped or no longer trustworthy, use a written dimension as the key. Say a wall is dimensioned 4200 and measures 84 mm on the sheet:
N = real ÷ drawing = 4200 ÷ 84 = 50 ⇒ 1:50
Then verify against a second written dimension before you trust it. If another wall is dimensioned 1850 and measures 37 mm, 37 × 50 = 1850 mm ✓ and the scale holds. If the second check comes out 3–5% off in the same direction on both dimensions, the sheet is not off-standard — it has been resized, and the print scale correction calculator will recover the actual factor of the print. Use the longest available dimension as the key: a 1 mm reading error on 84 mm is 1.2%, but on 20 mm it is 5%.
Why the paper size matters
Scale, sheet size and drawn extent are linked: a 1:50 plan of a 20 m building needs 400 mm of paper. If it does not fit the sheet, the scale has to change — which is exactly the pressure that produces off-standard, unreadable scales.
What this does not tell you
A measured drawing dimension is only as good as the print. Fit-to-page printing, photocopying and PDF scaling all change the effective scale silently, and paper itself moves with humidity. Many drawings carry a “do not scale from this drawing” note for exactly this reason.
Written dimensions always take precedence over measured ones, and the drawing's own tolerances, revision status and stated units govern the work. This calculator converts geometry; it does not verify that the drawing is current or correct.

- How do I get a real dimension from a scaled drawing?
- Multiply the measured length by the scale denominator. At 1:50, 37 mm on paper is 37 × 50 = 1850 mm on site.
- How long should a real dimension be on the drawing?
- Divide it by the denominator. A 4200 mm wall at 1:50 is 84 mm on paper.
- Can I trust a dimension I measured off a print?
- Only as an approximation. Printed drawings drift out of scale through fit-to-page printing and photocopying, and drawings are often marked “do not scale”. Use written dimensions where they exist.
- My measurement does not match the written dimension. Why?
