How this calculation works
Architectural notation states how much paper represents one foot. Converting it to a ratio is one division:
N = 12 ÷ (paper inches per foot)
So 1/4" = 1' is 12 ÷ (1/4) = 48, written 1:48. Because the paper value is kept as a fraction, awkward scales such as 3/32" = 1' resolve exactly to 1:128 instead of a rounded decimal.

A full round trip on a fractional dimension
Fractions are where imperial scaling goes wrong, because a decimal shortcut early on reappears as a visible error on paper. Take 12' 6½" at 1/4" = 1' (1:48), kept exact throughout:
12' 6½" = (12 × 12) + 6 + 1/2 = 150½" = 301/2 in
paper = (301/2) ÷ 48 = 301/96 in = 3.1354…" ≈ 3 1/8" (79.64 mm)
And back the other way, which must return the dimension you started with:
real = (301/96) × 48 = 301/2 in = 150½" = 12' 6½" ✓
The round trip closes exactly because 301/2 and 301/96 are held as fractions. Note the trap in the middle line: 301/96 is 3.1354", and the nearest sixteenth (3 1/8" = 3.125") is 0.0104" short — 0.26 mm on paper, which is half a foot on site at 1:48. Scale from the number, not from where your rule appears to land.
Three notations that describe scale, and how to tell them apart

The tell is the left-hand side: a fraction of an inch means architectural, a whole inch against many feet means engineering, and no units at all means a plain ratio. 1" = 50' is 1:600 and 1/4" = 1' is 1:48 — reading either with the other rule is a common and expensive error, and the ratio column is the only common language between them.
What this does not tell you
Imperial and metric scales are close but not equal. 1/4" = 1' (1:48) is not 1:50, and 1/8" = 1' (1:96) is not 1:100. Reading one with the other's rule introduces a silent 4% error over the whole drawing.
As with any drawing, measured values are inferior to written dimensions, and a print that went through fit-to-page or a copier is no longer at its stated scale. Verify with a known dimension before you rely on a measurement.
Questions people ask about this
- What ratio is 1/4" = 1'?
- 1:48. One foot is twelve inches, and a quarter inch represents it, so the denominator is 12 ÷ 0.25 = 48.
- What ratio is 1/8" = 1'?
- 1:96 — half the size of 1/4" = 1'. The common architectural scales are 1/16" = 1' (1:192), 1/8" (1:96), 1/4" (1:48), 1/2" (1:24), 1" = 1' (1:12) and 3" = 1' (1:4).
- Is 1/4" = 1' the same as 1:50?
- No, and the difference matters. 1/4" = 1' is 1:48, about 4% larger than 1:50. A metric scale rule will misread an imperial drawing.
- Can I enter feet and inches directly?
- Yes. Type 12' 6", 12ft 6in or 12' 6 1/2" and it is converted exactly — a half inch stays a half inch rather than becoming 0.5 rounded.
